Totesport is the twenty first century name and brand for The Tote, or the Horserace Totalisator Board to give its full title, which was formed in the United Kingdom by an Act Of Parliament in 1928 by Winston Churchill. The purpose of The Tote was to give bettors the chance to bet on horse racing at the tracks which, being state controlled, would be a safe alternative to the illegal off course bookmakers. The Tote used the system of pool betting, also known as parimutuel betting, to offer value bets to its clients and a share of the profits was re-invested back to improve the quality of horseracing as a sport.

Totesport currently have an exclusive license to offer pool betting on horse racing which it does via its 500+ retail outlets in addition to betting terminals in 4500+ other locations. Due to a quirk of its creation, Totesport is an unusual bookmaker in the sense that it is not owned by any one person or any one body although legislation was passed in 2004 which would see the business of Totesport, complete with all assets and liabilities, be passed into public ownership before being sold on the open market via an auction.

In 2002 the Tote BetXpress internet service was launched which was subsequently rebranded to Totesport in 2005 and now offers a full selection of offerings, although naturally it does tend to be biased towards the European market, and is currently one of a handful of online bookmakers offering pool betting on horseracing. Both bet limits and minimum bets are low which makes it an excellent choice for the recreational bettor.
