Sky Bet is subsidiary of BSkyB, a public satellite broadcasting company in which the Rupert Murdoch News Corporation has a near 40% stake in, and is one of the few large gaming operations which still operate out of the United Kingdom but with no retail outlets. The origins of Sky Bet date back to July 2000 when BSkyB purchased Sports Internet Group which included Surrey Sports, a small online and telephone sports betting operation whose revenues mainly came through horse racing bets.
In 2002, Surrey Sports was incorporated under the umbrella of the Sky Bet brand after which BSkyB embarked on a program of expansion as it acquired 365 Media which included the existing online bookmakers UKBetting and TotalBet. Also included in the acquisition was an extensive network of sports media sites where Sky Bet are now able to feature heavily on by the way of shared content and advertising; coupled with bingo and poker offering via television to BSkyB’s estimated 10 million subscribers, the brand has a formidable and extensive level of market penetration.
Since Sky Bet services only the British Isles, the selection of bets is naturally biased towards that particular market with offerings for soccer, horse racing and greyhound racing where they offer a plethora of betting options. Even for the more obscure sports, from a British perspective, there are still abilities to bet; for American sports, the -110 pricing on sides/totals is fair value for a European sportsbook although the range of props are not as vast as the likes of Bet365.
For a UK customer wanting to bet on UK events, Sky Bet are an excellent choice even discounting the available options of the online poker, the online casino and the ability to gamble via television. Being a subscriber to BSkyB makes Sky Bet an even better choice since they allow all customers to watch a wide range of live sports via the internet for free and in HD.
