Paddy Power emerged in 1988 as a result of a merger between three high street bookmakers in the Republic of Ireland and have been renowned ever since their inception for injecting an element of entertainment into the gambling industry. They are the largest bookmaker in Ireland and operate over 300 retail outlets in Ireland and the United Kingdom combined along with their telephone and online betting operations. Although they have predominantly concentrated on the Irish and UK markets in early years, their offerings are geared towards a European audience and in 2009 they expanded their overseas penetration as they purchased Sportbet and IAS, a pair of Australian sportsbooks.
Paddy Power consistently use the power of the media to garner attention through their offerings; in 2008 they made worldwide headlines after offering a bet that US President Obama would not finish his first term and then later confirmed that death from a sniper bullet would result in a payout. In less controversial offerings that attract media coverage, they regularly payout on seemingly guaranteed winning bets before the match is over. At the 2009 USPGA, Tiger Woods was winning by four shots after two rounds and was a 1/5 favorite to win the competition and so Paddy Power elected to pay out all 20,000 bets on Woods at a cost of €1,500,000. That proved to be a costly mistake since they also had to pay out on the eventual winner, Yang Yong-eun of South Korea, who finished three strokes ahead of Woods.
Paddy Power offer a wide range of bets and props for European sports and their lines for American sports are competitive in price and broad in range and, for the gambling junkie, there are endless supply of bets such as betting on an odd or even total in a European Basketball League game.
