Intertops date back to 1983 when German native Detlef Train moved to England and, using his British bookmaking license, offered customers in Germany the chance to bet on sporting events under the name Intertops Sportwetten which revolutionized the German sports betting industry. Prior to this, the betting market was a state run monopoly which offered a poor selection of betting opportunities. Intertops mailed coupons to customers on a weekly basis who then placed their bets either over the phone or by posting cash to the Intertops UK office which initially operated efficiently. However, the privatization of the UK Post Office led to increases in delivery times and so Intertops moved to Salzburg, Austria in 1992 where regulations were liberal and operations could be improved, before moving finally their operations to Antigua.
During the transitional period, Intertops examined the potential of the internet - which was largely unheard of at that time outside of academic circles - in order to bring its brand to a mass audience. In 1996, after little over a year of work on the online operation, January 17 1996 marked a historic day for the betting industry as Intertops took the world’s first online bet when Jukka Honkavaara of Finland placed a bet on a Third Round match in the English FA Cup Third Round. The bet placed was $50 for Tottenham Hotspur to win against lowly Hereford town at a price of 1/25 (or 1.04 in decimal terms); Tottenham won the game 5-1 which gave Honkavaara a total profit of $2 and ensured that the first ever online bet was a winner.
Following their pioneering of internet gambling, Intertops move to the expanding cell phone market and boast another first when they took the first ever bet over WAP in 2000. Today, Intertops remain a trusted brand and markets itself as an excellent choice for the first time gambler with a combination of low minimum wagers and a wide range of betting options.
