Bodog was launched in 1994 and was originally conceived as a software development company by its founder Calvin Ayre who undertook a number of internet ventures, including a VOIP operation, before moving into the market of internet gambling. After moving to Costa Rica in 1996, Ayre launched the Bodog sports betting site in 2000 which appealed to the small scale gambler through its ease of use, helping to pioneer the use of online checks where money was wired from US customers to Bodog’s London offices.
Ayre was a prominent spokesperson for the Bodog brand and also for online gambling as an industry which was at odds with US legislation at the time. He was featured in a 2006 cover interview with Forbes magazine with an article entitled “Catch Me If You Can” which referenced a 2002 Steven Spielberg film and was also a direct message to US authorities concerning the growing internet gambling industry. Either by coincidence or as a direct result, the SAFE Port Act was written into law in late 2006 which placed restrictions on the ability of US players to gamble online.
In 2008 Ayre claimed that Bodog had changed their business model and cut direct ties with online gambling and moved to a franchise model where they license their name to third party companies who then operate under the Bodog brand. In the first interview following the business transformation Ayre likened the new business arrangement as “not unlike the Virgin-branded venture capital organization founded by Richard Branson”. The Bodog brand is currently exclusively operated by the Morris Mohawk Gaming Group (MMGG) who is located at the Indian reserve of Kahnawake, Canada.
From the early origins of to the current day, Bodog have always concentrated on ease of use for its customers and they remain a solid option for the recreational bettor and are one of the few operations who still offer free payouts through eligible payment methods.
