Betsson was established in 2001 when it was founded by the Swedish trio of Henrik Bergquist, Anders Holmgren and Fredrik Sidfalk who first gained a betting license in the United Kingdom in April 2002 which was followed by the launch of their online site a month later which targeted the domestic Swedish market as well as the United Kingdom where the existing retail outlets had been sluggish in marketing their offerings via the internet. Following the swift expansion of their market to Central/East Europe and the Nordic region, Cherry Företagen AB became a minority stakeholder in Betsson in 2004.
Cherry Företagen was founded in 1963 as a Swedish supplier of slot machines and just over ten years later it was the leader in the domestic gaming market and, with the advent of the internet, it became one of the first online casinos. In April 2005, Betsson became a fully owned subsidiary company of Cherry Företagen and the new company fully reverted to the Betsson brand the following year.
In the European betting industry, it is more usual for companies with bricks and mortar operations to make the transition from retail outlets to an online presence. In 2008 Betsson bucked the trend as they opened their first retail outlet in Stockholm, Sweden. Svenska Spel (translating as “Swedish Games") is a state owned company with sportsbetting, poker and lottery offerings and the introduction of Betsson into the market aimed to break up the Swedish betting monopoly.
Betsson offer a wide range of bets aimed at their Western European and Nordic clientele and for people who have an interest in betting on soccer, they are an invaluable resource as they regularly feature 8000+ different betting lines including the more obscure leagues such as the Croation HNL and Serbian Super Liga which are offered by very few sportsbooks.
