Bet365 started out as a chain of three betting shops opened by the then and current owner Peter Coates in 1974. The firm expanded in the following two decades but it was not until 2001 that rapid expansion occurred following the debut of their online betting platform to make them currently one of the ten largest private firms, and the largest private gaming firm, in the United Kingdom.
In 2005, Bet365 bucked the trend of the gaming industry when they sold their retail holdings to the rival Gala Coral Group in a market where online operators such as Blue Square, UKBetting and Victor Chandler had all opened new retail outlets in the previous twelve months. At the time, the 90% of their turnover came from its online operations and they understood the higher profit margins of internet based gambling where different types of gaming can be cross sold to their customers. The injection of capital from the sale enabled Bet365 to expand and following a partnership with Macom, a marketing operation based in Macau, they became one of the few Western operators to gain market share in the Asian markets.
Bet365 offer a wide range of betting lines for their mainly European clientele and also have extensive, and reasonably priced, markets for American sports offering not just sides and totals but also first and second half betting, quarter betting and a plethora of propositions. While the markets offered are reason enough to join Bet365, it is an essential sportsbook for any bettor interested in live betting.
With a policy of if they can find it being televised they will take bets on it, Bet365 offer an unrivaled range of markets. Although live betting on the higher profile sports like soccer is common at a lot of sportsbooks, a European operation who offers over 20 betting options on American college basketball game is unique in the industry. Coupled with the range, Bet365 live betting offers prices far more competitive than its rivals and in fact their vigorish on its live betting is less than on pre-game offerings than at some established rivals like Ladbrokes.
